The 9 Days of Christmas - Day 1 - Yogi

Welcome to Quietfire Design's 9 Days of Christmas!
We have a wonderful way to share these new stamps with you during this event.
If you are a subscriber to Scrapbooking.com you will have seen Judi Kauffman's Holiday Headstart article published Sept 1, 2013. In that article each designer created three cards of increasing complexity. We will be continuing that theme for all 9 days!

Each designer has created
  1. One "quick and easy" card - in a style you can make multiples of, but nice enough to send out to your friends.  Basically; cardstock, stamp, patterned paper.
  2. One "a little more" card - the same card as the "quick and easy", but adding some embellishment or more complex.  This one would take a bit more time or cost a bit more to make.
  3. One "over the top" card  - Enough said!  This would be an heirloom card, something you'd keep, frame, display every year - perhaps something with a removable ornament. For hand delivery or shipped in a box.

The new stamps may be found
in the New Stamps department
by clicking
here.

Here are Yogi's creations!
I'm using the holly berries stamp from Flourishes set #SS214 Naturally Merry on each card. Click on any image to enlarge.

ID: Easiest - Holly Berries Merry Christmas
EASIEST MERRY CHRISTMAS
I side folded my white card (5.5"w x 4.25"h). Inked up the stamp using Distress "Worn Lipstick", then over coloring with Distress Markers in 2 shades of green "Shabby Shutters" all over the leaves then a flick along the veins with "Pine Needles", misted with water and stamped onto my card front, leaving the stamp in place for a few seconds to allow the water to activate the color.

Stamped the sentiment with Versafine Black Onyx.

Cut a stencil, 1/2" h x approx 5"w rectangle from cardstock. Placed the drop out where I wanted my horizontal border type design to land, held that in place and placed my stencil down, adhering it with removable tape, then removed the drop out piece. Inked up the stamp as above and stamped in the stencil area. Repeated for lower border area.

When dry, used a matching green Distress marker to draw lines for the border. Please don't tell me that's not an easy card to make, even assembly line style...

EASIER MERRY CHRISTMAS
I side folded my white card (5.5"w x 4.25"h). Using the same watercolor technique as above, stamped the image on the left side of my card.

Colored the berries with a red Distress marker, when dry, added Glossy Accents to each berry. Set aside to dry while doing the next step.

Die cut a bunch of holly leaves (Sizzix Tim's "Lampost" die set) from some greenish decorated cardstock. Cut the leaves apart and sponged a bit more of the greens over each leaf, then used the green marker "Pine Needles" to add veins. Applied globs of white glue (Aleene's Tacky glue) and stuck leaves in the glue globs so they stood up at an angle. Allowed that to dry thoroughly.

Stamped the sentiment with Versafine Black Onyx.

And without re-inking the berry stamp, just misting with water, stamped a 2nd generation border, turning the stamp to an unused portion to continue stamping around the edges. Other than the waiting time for drying, this is really an easy card to make.
ID: Easy - Easel Holly Berries Merry Christmas

EASY EASEL MERRY CHRISTMAS
I created the easel by cutting white cardstock to 7"w x 10"h, folding it in half and then folding one of halves in half again. So scored on 2.5" and 5". It creates a card 7"w x 5"h (easel closed)

Embossed the front easel section using Sizzix "Steampunk" folder, then repeated for the floor of the easel. Sponged with Distress "Old Paper" and touched here and there with "Vintage Photo".

Die cut the green layer with Spellbinders Grand Labels #28, ran through with Sizzix "Holly Leaves" folder, sponged with Distress "Shabby Shutters" and a touch of the "Old Paper". adhered a small piece of gold glittered ribbon to the right side in the center.

Stamped the quote with Versafine Black Onyx on white cardstock, die cut with Spellbinders "Decorative Labels #8", sponged some of the paper around the edges. Adhered to green layer. Created a bow from the glittered ribbon for the left side, attaching it with Tim's stapler "tiny attacher". Adhered these layers to the easel front piece (lower half only)

card closed
Stamped the berries on a separate piece of cardstock as previous cards. Colored the leaves with Prisma colored pencils laying a layer of a light olive, then a few flicks of a pine color, and a flick of red, then blending in circular motion with a Lyra Splendor Blender pencil. For the berries I applied Viva Pearl Pen Red dots. Allowed to dry and then applied dots of white with Ranger's white Enamel Accents. Allowed that to dry, cut out around the leaves and adhered to green layer.

Die cut another Labels #28 piece, folding a piece of white cardstock in half so I could get the size I wanted. Align the edges of the folded area at the same point on the left and right side of the die and tape down, then die cut. The fold line will disappear with the next step.

Emboss the Holly leaves on the die cut and color as above.

Stamp the sentiment with the black on white cardstock. Die cut with the Decorative Labels #8. Sponge with the Old Paper and adhere to small green layer and then onto card floor with 3D tape. This becomes the stopper for the easel front.

I really hope you'll give one or all a try for your Christmas cards this year. Have a great day and enjoy the 8 more days of Xmas making delights.

Great ideas for Christmas, I'd love to be on your list ;) I'm sure I'll be able to use some or all of your ideas for my cards too - I don't like to make *all* of them the same so I'm happy to get lots and lots of ideas like these. Thanks for sharing.

I love your cards - especially the last one. Every year I try to "out do" my previous Christmas cards for my daughter and son-in-law. Your easel card would be a great masculine card. I just love it. Can't wait to see your other cards. The easel card is also great for an aunt in an assisted living residence so that she can display it in her room. Can't wait to see tomorrow's cards.

Simply beautiful cards.

I needed the inspiration of your simple card. I belong to a craft group of about 15 ladies who make each other a hand crafted Christmas card each year. I have decided to go simple but elegant this year and your first card really fits the bill. Thanks for sharing Yogi
Warm regards Carole

I'm struck by how easily I can follow the progression of your lovely cards simply by following your written directions. (I usually need at least 72 photos to get through even "simple" cards!) As always, the stamps are so pretty and the cards wonderfully showcase them.

designs...I think I could actually make all three

The easel card is so beautiful. Where the verse is stamped would be a perfect place for a family photo. The greeting is then stamped on only the card base. No frame needed. Thanks, Yogi jB
