Walnut Hollow & Quietfire Blog Hop - Last Day!

Welcome to the final day of the Walnut Hollow & Quietfire 2014 Blog Hop!  We’re pleased you’re joining us and hope you've found lots of creative inspiration for combining Quietfire stamps on the beautiful Walnut Hollow wood products. 
 

 I love autumn. I'm not a lover of hot weather.  Thanksgiving used to be such an event in our family.  While the turkey was cooking, my mother took me out for walks and we'd collect leaves which inevitably ended up on the table and then later pressed in books. Visits to my grandparents when I was young found me reading a book or building a model airplane - or climbing the maple tree in their back yard. 

As soon as this blog hop was conceived, I had an idea. When you have something in your mind for so long (Chris and Sara from Walnut Hollow and I discussed the hop at the CHA conference in January!), I'm not sure the reality can ever live up to the expectation.  But, no matter what, it was fun getting to the final product.


I'm the daughter of a woodworker/furniture refinisher (amongst other things), so when my Walnut Hollow treasures arrived, I was in sniffing heaven!  Who doesn't love the smell of wood? I chose the Walnut Hollow Rustic Wood Ledge for this project and rather than use it as a ledge, I (as I think most of us would) flipped it over to use as a container! 

Along the side of the ledge, I chose to create the year-long story of a maple tree as it goes from bare branches in the winter, to maple syrup time and fresh buds, to lush summer coolness and on to the glorious colours of autumn.

Last week I introduced a new cutting file to help make this project easier:

Because of my passion for wood in its bare state, I didn't paint or stain the beautiful pine surface. (lol, no, it's not maple, but that's okay!)

Instructions:

1. Cut 8 trees from brown cardstock.  If your cardstock is fairly thin, cut 16 trees and double up each tree with adhesive so you have eight sturdier trees in total. Cut leaves in many colours, snowflakes from vellum, and swings, birdies and buckets from red cardstock.  (You could use Elizabeth Craft's All Season Tree die set if you don't own an electronic cutting machine.)
2. While they lay flat, assemble the trees with leaves, snowflakes and other elements as shown in the photographs. Decorate both sides of the trees as back of the tree tops will show across the table!
3. Stamp the sentiments on off-white cardstock and trim. Blend Jumbo Java around the edges of the cards to antique them.  Place book corners on each corner of each card and crimp in place.
4. Attach the brass corners to edges of ledge.
5. Apply the pearl flourish to the side of the ledge so winter blows into spring. Attach trees and sentiment panels to ledge with Pop Dots as shown.

6. On the Silhouette Cameo, ungroup the leaf spray card elements and cut only the leaves from a sheet of patterned paper.  Use Glue Dots to attach leaves to the ends of the ledge - because we just can't leave it naked!

7. Add some scented candles and rocks to the inside - or fill it with pressed leaves and you'll be all set for the sharing part of Thanksgiving!

How Beautifully  Leaves Grow Old

The sentiment is stamped in VersaMark and heat embossed

with  copper embossing powder on Spellbinders Decorative Labels 28 layered on Spellbinders Floral Oval.

The leaves are cut from Spellbinders Assorted Leaves, Kraft Glassine paper, crinkled and colored. The ink needs to be heat set into the paper.

The flowers are constructed from Silhouette Cut files,

Here is how they look on the mat.

First I tried the Harvest Blessings cut file to make my sentiment embellishment and for some creative reason, Thankful stole the show!

On the mat:

I've always been an Italic kind of girl, and Suzanne has won me over to Blackletter!

Cut five layers out of card stock, glue them together and thermal emboss gold.

The whole thing is held together with a lot of glue dots. I cut many of them up into tiny pieces to hide them and if you run your scissor through perfect medium or VersaMark they won't stick.

The adhesive of choice is Glue Dots! They held well to both paper and wood, are almost invisible, and I could move them around a bit it needed.

***Tip***

Put all your elements in place, take a photo, then you can take it apart and glue it, with the photo for reference.

Quietfire & Walnut Hollow Blog Hop - day 4 - Do what makes you happy

Hello everyone, Yvonne here today on day 4 of the Quietfire & Walnut Hollow bloghop.

We're pleased you're joining us for lots and lots of creative inspiration for combining Quietfire stamps and Walnut Hollow wood products.

 

I chose this mini Hinged sign (#40255) and Twirl & Enjoy (#6397) for my project.

I know the bare wood is lovely, but I decided to paint my hinged sign soft grey, using gesso with a drop of grey paint in it.

Then glued upon  a white  piece of cardstock and aged it with VintagePhoto Distress ink  and a blending tool.
Upon I placed a piece of patternd paper which I aged with distress ink and a distresser tool.
Then added the lace and ribbon.

 

The Quietfire text was stamped upon white cardstock using black Archival ink.

Then cut/embossed/stencilled some Spellbinders dies : Parasian Motifs (S5-035) and upon  Stately Circles (S4-388).
Use foam squares /tape to glue the circles upon the hinged sign.
The sign is finished of with lots of mulberry flowers, leaves and pearl stripes.

 

I have put this sign on my desk, just to remmind me how much fun my papercraft hobby is!

Walnut Hollow & Quietfire Design - Rustic Wood Ledge - Give Thanks

Yogi here today and I've finally found a container that holds all my immediate paraphernalia on my desk... It's a Rustic Wood Ledge by Walnut Hollow item #40310.

What's in this holder is everything I use on a daily basis... plus what I love is the positive affirmations I see all the time, and double plus, since both sides are different, I can just turn it around and not get bored with it...

... to continue with the descriptions for my project:
I'm using parts of quotes  and one of the newest quote stamps from Quietfire Design. as well as the printed words from eCut labels available on the Silhouette online store.

Craft Room Labels General, Craft room Labels - Pen set, (ps there are more labels available), Courage Doesn't Always Roar, You May Not Be Able, Give Thanks For Little.

I sanded the outside until I got the smoothness I wanted. I gave the front a very light coat of white gesso.

I traced a real oak leaf onto cardstock, cut it out and used it as a stencil to draw my leaf design using a pencil. I went over the lines adding veins with a wood burning pointed tool. I also added some darker areas below the leaves as shadows. Colored the leaves with Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils and moved the colors around with water.

VERY LIGHTLY sprayed a piece of photocopy paper with repositionable spray (Krylon Easy Tac), placed a piece of white tissue paper onto the stickiness, then trimmed off the excess. Ran it through my printer, printing the words from the label designs. Carefully removed the tissue paper from the photocopy paper. Used a wet brush around the words to tear it. Adhered it to the leaves with Golden's Matte Medium.

Masked off the words from the quote I wanted to stamp and inked it with Versafine Black Onyx, clear embossed.

Stamped the ladybug (Lasting Impressions) a couple times. Added the 3D ladybug from my stash (very old stash...)

The back I painted with brown chalkboard paint which gave it a nice matte finish.

I stamped the 5 petal leaf (Rubbernecker "Leaf 5") using white acrylic paint, when dry, colored with the Inktense pencils. (PS wash your stamp right away...)

The maple leaves (Rubbernecker "Maple Leaf") I inked up the stamp using Distress acrylic daubers ("Mustard Seed", "Wild Honey", "Barn Door" & "Crushed Olive") and stamping. When dry, shadow outlined with a Sakura white gel pen.

Stamped the quote using Versafine "Toffee" and embossing with white embossing powder.

For the inside, I masked my edges and spray painted with a green acrylic paint

QUIETFIRE & WALNUT HOLLOW- THANKFUL

Hi Everyone! This is Holly and I'd like to welcome you to Day 3, of the Walnut Hollow & Quietfire 2014 Blog Hop! We're pleased you're joining us and know you'll find lots of creative inspiration for combining Quietfire stamps with beautiful Walnut Hollow wood products. 

I chose this Contemporary Memory Album #3700 (thank you Walnut Hollow!) and 

GIVE THANKS stamp set.

To get to this point, I did the following...after a light sanding, I painted watered down acrylic paint, purposely leaving a streaked, distressed look. I applied darker and lighter thinned paints to harlequin and flourish stamps, and placed them randomly on the painted wood cover. More sanding along the edges, and here and there completed the distressing. I glued the calligraphic frame to the two pieces, then cut between them, then attached the hinge hardware. The whole album was 'painted' with a coat of white glue mixed 1/1 with water, to seal everything.

All the leaves and flowers were sponged with Distress Inks. 

Some pieces were stamped lightly, others were embossed.

The cut words were clear embossed for shine.

The hardware was dabbed with alcohol ink.

Watered down distress ink was then splattered onto the cover.

 I still have the option of gluing the sunflowers flat, if using the album is too hard on them.

I love this album so much, and really enjoyed working with the quality wood and all the great Quietfire Design products.
