The Real Voyage

Hello on this beautiful Tuesday!!!  I hope you are having a good week!!

Today I'm sharing a journal card with you.  I intend to make a bunch of these 4" x 6" cards and then bind them into a book.

For the background I started by gluing part of a world map from an old atlas onto a 4" x 6" piece of watercolor paper.  I lightly brayered paint (Fresco Finish Sherbet, Mermaid, Teresa Green) over the paper being sure not to cover everything up.  Stenciling was done with the same colors of paint.  After being sure the paint was completely dry, the quote was stamped with Archival Ink Jet Black using the stamp platform so I could stamp a few times to get a nice, dark quote.  The Grid Background was stamped with Archival Ink Peat Moss along all 4 edges.  Next came a bit more stenciling to help blend in the breaks in the grid stamping.  I die cut the Flourished Oval Frame and Butterfly from white cardstock.  The butterfly was embossed with Baked Texture Ancient Amber embossing powder.  The frame as well as around the edges of the card are embossed with Baked Texture Patina Oxide embossing powder.

Oh, I really like this! It’s definitely not the typical use-a-map creation. It has so much depth and the colors are glorious. Did you start such a complex design with this as your final destination? (Sorry — I just realized that was kind of a pun....). What I mean is - did you start with this finished product in mind, or did you start with a small idea and keep building?

My cards take FOREVER to finish because I usually have one item to start with (a stamp or a special paper or a die cut) and I keep going until I’m done. I can never envision creating something so beautiful as the end point. If anything, I go too far and end up with a mess. Your art, however, is always so pulled together and amazing. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Mary!!! You are so sweet!!! NO, I do not have an end plan in mind when I create and I honestly try not to because, in the past, any time I've been able to picture what I want at the end, I can't get there... it never works out. LOL It works much better for me if I do something and then see what I want to do next. It can certainly be difficult to know when to stop. I've gone too far with a project many a time.
