Stand Up Birthday!

Here is a fun way to use your word diecuts.  Stand them up!  You can put them in all sorts of places on their special day.  Place them on the table, mantle or a bedside table.  Add them to the top of a cake or cupcake! There is no end to where you can put them. This project goes together really quickly, so you can make lots and leave them around the house or office.  Give someone a stand up birthday!

Rinea Double sided foiled paper – Woodlands Variety Pack in pale green textured, pale green smooth and dark green. Princess Variety Pack in pink.

Xyron Mega Runner Permanent Adhesive

Instructions:

1. Die cut Happy Birthday from pale green textured and pale green smooth foiled paper.  Die cut flower from pink and the leaves from dark green textured foiled paper.
2. Run adhesive across the top of the letters on Happy of the rear die cut. I used the smooth foil for the back diecut.  Align the top die cut and adhere to the back.  
3. Adhere the leaves to the back of the flower.  Attach the flower and leaves to the H on Happy Birthday.
4. Gently pull the back and front die cuts apart to form a tent so the words will stand on their own.   
5. Stand Happy Birthday on a surface.  If it’s not straight, carefully trim off the bottoms of the flourishes till the word sit straight. Refer to the photo.
6. 1.       Place the stand-up Happy Birthday on a desk, on a cake, on a cupcake or anywhere your special birthday person might see it all day long.

This thoughtful little addition will please anyone celebrating their birthday.  Try it with other word dies for different occasions!

Instructions:

1.    Cut a piece of Specialty Stamping paper in half.  Use removable tape to adhere one edge of the stencil to the Specialty Stamping Paper near one side. Use a pencil to mark inside the 4 registration holes at the corners of the design.  This registers the position of the stencil so we can move it and keep it lined up.

2.    Blend the Distress colours in each of the down feather cutouts.  When you’re happy with that, move the stencil to the right placing the holes on the left of the stencil over the pencil marks to the right.  Continue stenciling the down feathers.  Allow to dry for a bit.

3.    Trim the stenciled paper to approximately 5.5 x 3.75”.

4.    Use VersaMagic Turquoise Gem to stamp the sentiment (positioned as shown in the photo) using a stamp positioner with multiple light impressions rather than one heavy one.  This maintains the thicks and thins of the lettering.

5.    Diecut Soar once from turquoise cardstock and once from yellow cardstock.  Adhere the diecuts together so the yellow becomes the dropshadow.  Mount to stenciled panel with Micro Glue Dots.

6.    Cut a slightly larger mat from turquoise cardstock and another slightly larger from yellow. Adhere the three layers together.

7.    Cut a 5x7” tent-fold card base from turquoise cardstock.

8.    Adhere these panels to the card base with Scrapbook Adhesives Foam Squares.

Summary!

• We registered a stencil and moved it to create a background pattern. 
• Coloured blending through a stencil
• Stamped on background
• Added an A Way With Words diecut with a dropshadow
• Created a layered card

Rosebud Wreath - Miss You - Love Collection - The Human Heart

Yogi here today ad I was in a mood to create a simpler card than I normally do... Love the way this one turned out.

I'm using several dies "Rosebud Wreath" 8pce set and "Miss You" from Elizabeth Craft Designs, also available on Quietfire Design HERE and HERE    

I'm using rubber  stamp quote from Quietfire Design. ("The Human Heart...")

And I'm using a couple hearts from a clear stamp set "Love  & Hearts Collection" 10pce set by Quietfire Design also available on Elizabeth Craft Designs HERE
 

Cut, scored and folded my white cardstock to create the 7"w x 5"h top fold structure. Cut a piece of Co-Ordinations pink toned cardstock slightly smaller than card, rounded the corners with a corner rounder punch than adhered it to card front.

Die cut the leafy wreath from a tissue box cardstock (the whole box had beautiful leaves all over it - BIG GRIN). Spliced and adhered to the contour of a large heart shape. Adhered to card front. Die cut the rose buds from white cardstock, inked the sold layer with Distress "Spun Sugar" and the overlay with "Picked Raspberry" clear embossed. Adhered both layers together and then onto the wreath.

Die cut the "Miss You from another Co-ordinations cardstock, inked with Versamark and embossed with Pearlescent embossing powder. Adhered to front. I then used the fine tip of a black Zig Writer to create a shadow on the right and bottom side of each stroke.
 

On the inside: Stamped the hearts using Tim's Stampin Platform and Distress Spun Sugar and clear embossed. Stamped the heart outline using Versafine Clair "Charming Pink" and clear embossed.

Stamped the quote using Versafine Black Onyx and clear embossed on a pink cardstock. Trimmed down to fit the contour of the hearts.

Wanderlust Tag

Hey Quietfire Fans! I was busy playing with the Butterflies/Dragonflies stamp set this past weekend. Combining the stamp set with a few other stamps and A Way With Words dies, they were the perfect for creating my Wanderlust Tag. This tag is perfect to add to a gift or give it to someone special with a note on the back. You'll want to grab a cup of your favourite summer time beverage and learn how to recreate my tag at home.

To start, you'll need a Distress Tag. Spritz Faded Jeans, Cracked Pistachio and Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Spray over the entire surface of the tag. Before drying, spritz the tag with a bit of water. Dry the tag with a heat tool.

With the sprays still out, spritz Faded Jeans, Cracked Pistachio and Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Sprays over a piece of white cardstock. Before drying, spritz the paper with water. Dry the paper with a heat tool. Apply Jet Black Archival Ink to the Wanderlust word and stamp onto the now coloured paper. Fussy cut the word out. Ink the edges of the word using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Apply Potting Soil Archival Ink to the Grid Background stamp and stamp randomly on the tag. Reapply the ink to the stamp as needed. Apply Jet BlackArchival Ink to the Crackle Background stamp and stamp randomly on the tag. Reapply the ink to the stamp as needed. Apply Ground Espresso Distress Crayon to the edges of the tag and rub the crayon in.

Die cut the Flourished Oval Frame out of a piece of white cardstock. Apply a coat of Emboss It Ink to the frame. Sprinkle Weathered Wood embossing powder over the entire surface of the frame. Tap off the excess powder and emboss with a heat tool.

Apply Jet Black Archival Ink to both dragonflies and stamp onto a piece of watercolour cardstock. Using a waterbrush, colour the dragonflies in with Cracked Pistachio and Faded Jeans Distress Ink. Fussy cut the dragonflies out. Ink the edges of the dragonflies using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Adhere the flourished oval frame to the middle left hand side of the tag. 

Shape the wings of the dragonflies. Use foam squares to adhere the dragonflies to the middle of the frame, one on top of another.

Foam square the wanderlust word to the bottom right hand side of the frame.

To finish off the tag, tie a piece of twine through the top of the tag.

Courage - Nancy Nickel, Guest Designer

I’m very excited to be a Guest Designer for Quietfire this month! I’ve been a huge fan of Suzanne, and all things Quietfire, for a long time! To be sharing some projects here is really thrilling for me. Never mind all the fun I had making them!

Today I have a card to share with you. This card features the very lovely Leafy Garden Frame Card Cutting File. These layers come together so easily to create a really beautiful card. The hardest part is choosing the papers. I often like to use black on a layered card like this. It’s always pleasing to my eyes, and really allows the focal sentiment to stand out. This is such a lovely sentiment too.

I began with a black cardstock card base. The next layer was the pretty patterned paper that had lots of colours. On top of that came the corner cut piece. For this I chose the black with the gloss texture on it. It offers some interest but doesn’t compete with the layer under it, or the design showing through in the corners. Next, I moved on to the ovals. The small one that would contain the sentiment, I cut from a light turquoise cardstock that matched the patterned paper. The larger oval that matted it, I cut from a coordinating multi-striped paper, from the collection. Since it’s between two solid colours, it doesn’t get too busy.

Now it was time to stamp the sentiment. I used a stamp positioning tool to do this. I stamped it in black ink. What a lovely impression it gave…just beautiful! 

At this point I decided that I wanted the sentiment to be glossy, to match the gloss texture of the black background. I left the stamped sentiment in place on the stamp positioning tool, and patted it with the anti-static pouch. I cleaned the black ink off the stamp, and inked it up with the embossing ink. I re-stamped the sentiment with the embossing ink. I removed the stamped oval, sprinkled it with clear embossing powder, and heat set it. In the close-up photo of the sentiment, you can see the beautiful shine on the words. I then adhered this oval onto the striped oval. I added foam tape to the back of the striped oval. Then it was just a matter of adhering everything in place, from the bottom up. Finally, I added a pretty white shimmer ribbon bow to the top of the oval, and my card was done!

This same design can be used over and over again. Just a change of papers, and different sentiment stamp, and you would have an entirely new look! It can even be used horizontally! I know it’s a cut file that I’ll go back to again and again!

Live like someone left the gate open

... but please don't actually leave the gate open!  My Shadow would run out and not know the way home!  But he is super happy chasing rabbits and squirrels which we do not want inside our own fenced yard.

It makes a really cute card though!  I picked up this Arbor die by Rubbernecker at the Scrapbook Expo and knew it would go perfectly with this stamp from Quietfire Design.  I sponged the sky and added the arbor - die-cutting the gate a couple of extra times to be used as the fence.

I layered up some grass dies by Impression Obsession and added tiny flowers (the stamens the Bougainvillea die by Elizabeth Craft Designs).  By arranging the flowers in a different patterns in different colors, I got the look of different flowers even though they are the same die.

Another find from the Expo were these two dogs from Art Impressions Dog House Cubbies.  I think that hound is actually laying down but I made him jumping with joy to go with the sentiment stamped about the garden scene.  

 I did not glue the gate down but used the latches as a hinge for the gate so it would open and close.  (My kids say it looks like the gate is closing on the door but I say he's busting out. In-house critics are the worst!)

Recycling Sewing Patterns

Hello, Connie Nichol here today with a few cards that use old sewing patterns for backgrounds.  I recently did an article on this topic for Creative Scrapbooker Magazine  and I am just enamoured with the old patterns.  They make such easy and pretty cards.  Here's a couple of examples:

Here's what you need to make your card background - an old sewing pattern, white cardstock and some gel medium.  I usually find old sewing patterns at thrift stores and one pattern goes a long way. Take a section of the patterned tissue and adhere it to a pre-cut layer of cardstock with the gel medium.  Gel medium is essentially an acrylic paint without the pigment so it dries clear, smooth and it is archivally safe.  It comes in different thicknesses and finishes - for cards, I'd recommend the matte finish.  This gel medium by Prima works really well.

When the gel medium is dry, about 10-20 minutes depending upon how thick you've applied it, put it in an embossing folder and run it through your manual die cutting machine to add a whole bunch of texture.

Then, simply add a Quietfire Design die cut word, or a stamped quote.  You can add a bit of ribbon, paper flowers or other embellishment but that's it.  Easy, huh?

Here's a card that was published in the summer issue of Creative Scrapbooker magazine.   I created a sewing pattern flower by twisting strips of sewing tissue and winding in a circle on a sheet of two sided adhesive.  I coloured it by giving it a quick spray with dye ink spritzer.  Add the die cut small Happy Birthday and you've created a unique card.
